Safe to Grow

and the Social Work Growth Framework

Introduction

This is a developing framework built on 5 core pillars aimed at; reclaiming relationship based practice with Children in Care, creating a culture of growth which permeates the entire system, unifying theory into a single framework for practice with the aim of promoting practitioner retention and improving the outcomes for Children in Care.

Within the Social Work Growth Framework, the Safety, Risk and Resilience element functions as a trauma-informed growth engine that encompasses key realms of both physical and psychological safety. It incorporates foundational models such as the risk-resilience matrix and Vygotsky’s zones of proximal learning to help practitioners navigate complex challenges while supporting individual and team well-being.

Focuses on moving beyond basic statutory compliance to foster intentional, self-directed professional development. It emphasizes developing individuals through honest, structured feedback, guided reflection that converts daily experience into lasting wisdom, and looking beyond standard expertise to embrace shared wisdom and meaningful metrics.

Identity, Love and Belonging centers on actively demonstrating love, fostering genuine belonging, and celebrating authentic identities while remaining critically aware of the dangers of misidentification. It addresses how projected, imposed, or internalised identities can create hidden emotional and behavioral harms even when labels appear positive on the surface ensuring practitioners help children move beyond distorted narratives and experience enduring relationships.

Moving beyond isolated interventions to actively identify, assess, and expand relational support circles for children, families, and practitioners. It utilises systems theory and direct-work tools such as; relationship sculpting, mapping tools, and network navigation strategies like Life Long Links and Family Group Conferences to build robust networks, foster natural connections, and proactively navigate or resolve conflict.

Focuses on widening participation for shared growth by actively preparing children, parents, and families to engage as true partners in their planning. It moves beyond compliance-driven consultation to ensure that children and parents understand their rights and values, co-creating future plans and writing the roadmap for growth together.
